The Nuffield Theatre in Southampton is looking for looking for new members for its youth company to audition for its 2017 season.
The Nuffield Youth Theatre 2017 season will include Consensual, which was premiered last year by the National Youth Theatre, and a new play The Monstrum, which will be taking part in the prestigious National Theatre Connections Festival. Auditions start Friday 30 September.
Consensual by Evan Placey follows on from the huge sell out success of Placey’s Girls Like That earlier this year. This controversial play about a relationship between a teacher and her student takes an honest look at the issue of consent with funny, feisty and profound dialogue. Placey is one of the country’s best writers for young people who, in his own words, “doesn’t censor the world for young people” His plays, Girls Like That and Pronoun, have been acclaimed successes and are performed by young people across the country on a regular basis.
NYT will also, once again, be taking part in the prestigious National Theatre Connections Festival, performing The Monstrum by Kellie Smith. This new play is a playful Gothic horror in the style of Mel Brooks’ classic Young Frankenstein and looks at how young people turn into monsters at a certain age.
NYT Director Max Lindsay commented: “The Monstrum will be looking at comic timing, choral work and ensemble movement to create this comic gothic tale. Consensual will use exercises that would be used in training at a drama school. Both of these productions provide a huge opportunity for developing skills as young performers as well as meeting like-minded new friends.”
NYT is open to young people aged between 13 and 21 years old living in Hampshire. Auditions for Consensual will be held on Friday 30 September and Sunday 2 October. Auditions for The Monstrum will take place in November.
