Producers have today announced principal casting for a new major tour of hit musical Hairspray, which opens at Curve Leicester this autumn before touring the UK
Tony Maudsley (ITV1’s Benidorm) will play Edna and will be joined by TV and stage actress and presenter Claire Sweeney (Educating Rita, Guys and Dolls) as Velma Von Tussle, Olivier Award nominated actor and former Blue Peter presenter Peter Duncan as Wilbur Turnblad and acclaimed singer and West End performer Brenda Edwards (Chicago, We Will Rock You, The X Factor) as Motormouth Maybelle.
Freya Sutton will reprise her rôle of Tracy Turnblad alongside Jon Tsouras as Corny Collins.
Further casting includes Dex Lee as Seaweed, Ashley Gilmour as Link Larkin, Lauren Stroud as Amber, Monique Young playing Penny, Karis Jack as Little Inez and Layton Williams as Duane. Further casting is still to be announced.
The new production will begin its UK tour at Leicester’s Curve theatre on 9 September 2015 and will then tour to over 25 venues across the UK, including a Christmas residency at Birmingham Alexandra Theatre in December 2015.
Hairspray will be directed by Paul Kerryson, with choreography by Drew McOnie and musical direction by Ben Atkinson. The show has music and lyrics by Academy Award, Tony and Emmy winning duo Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.
