Now in its 33rd year, Soho Theatre has today launched the 15th Verity Bargate Award (VBA), the biennial competition to uncover the best new play by an emerging UK writer. The winner, announced in early November will receive £6000 in respect of an exclusive option to produce the winning play on Soho Theatre’s stage, directed by Artistic Director, Steve Marmion.
In its search for the best first time and emerging UK playwright, the VBA is open to writers with fewer than three professional productions.
Through the VBA, Soho Theatre have cultivated a long line of successful playwrights, including Vicky Jones (The One), Bonnie Greer (In The Country Of The Young),and Matt Charman (A Night at the Dogs), all of whom will play a supporting rôle in this year’s competition.
In 2015, led by Soho Theatre’sAssociate Director Nina Steiger, Soho Theatre’s Writers’Centre will tour tovenues around the country, including Theatre Royal Plymouth, Birmingham REP and Live Theatre Newcastle. From April they will tour for ten weeks, presenting a series of workshops and masterclasses to encourage and tool-up emerging writers thinking of taking part in the competition.
Submissionswillbe accepted from 1–31 July, and will be followed by a two-month reading process giving the team time to look at the 900+ scripts that they receive (2013). The winner will be announced at a celebration of the shortlisted plays in November.
