Musicals Unsung – St James’ Studio, London

Musical Director: Kris Rawlinson
Reviewer: Tom Finch

This musical offering fromParallel Productionsis an interesting idea, songs which were cut from hit musicals prior to their official Broadway and West End runs.Musicals Unsungtakes in songs from shows includingShrek, Spring Awakening, WickedandThe Last Five Yearswith a few Disney songs thrown in for good measure.

Musical Director Kris Rawlinson has assembled a team of seasoned West End performers who perform the songs beautifully and with real passion.

Lucie Jones makes a big impact taking onMaking Goodwhich went on to be replaced byThe Wizard and Iin Wicked. Her voice is stunning and her laid back, good-humoured personality was a hit with the audience.

Some of the songs do feel like a bit of a cheat, however. Stewart Clarke’s rendition ofProud of Your Boywhich didn’t make it into the final cut of the Disney filmAladdinwas touching but given that the song has been placed in the stage adaptation (opening this month at the Prince Edward Theatre) it could have easily made way for a less well-known number.

It’s a small complaint though as the evening is thoroughly enjoyable and, for any musical theatre geek, it’s a fascinating insight into the creative process of making a new musical. At90 minutes, including an interval, it’s a delicious bite-size musical treat!
