BRIGHTON BITES: Helen Duff: When The Going Gets Duff

Back by popular demand for 2017, our Brighton Bites series offer short, witty and slightly tongue-in-cheek insights into shows performing at England’s largest arts festival. Hopefully, they will whet your appetite to try something new at this year’s Brighton Fringe.

Here, Helen Duff tells us about her show,Helen Duff: When The Going Gets Duff, which she’ll be performing atThe Warren.

How would you describe your show in one sentence?
A bold, subversive and very funny response to the way we live now from Amused Moose New Act 2017 Finalist Helen Duff.

Why Brighton Fringe for this show?
I love being able to plunge into the frothing waves with a head full of funny ideas and a body beset by pre-show shivers!

How have you been preparing for Brighton Fringe?
Tying my preview audiences up in webs of wool to explore non-linear narrative threads, the connections that keep us apart and the boundaries that define who we are.

What do you think sets your show apart from all the other festival offerings?
I spill out the unique workings of my inner self on stage – a preview in Perth described it as ‘pure artistry…

What’s the show that you don’t want to miss at this year’s Brighton Fringe (apart from your own)?
The Establishment are always great for a laugh! A brilliant double act that parody upper-class Tories and come terrifyingly close to the truth.

What’s the best bit of advice you’ve ever been given for performing at a Fringe Festival?
Don’t take it all too seriously.

If your show was a flavour of ice cream being sold on Brighton Pier, what would it be?
Honeycomb whip – gold and glittery from a distance, with a surprisingly satisfying bite.
