FIVE FAST FRINGE QUESTIONS with Sajeela Kershi

It’s that time of year when we launch our annual series of Fringe preview Q & A’s. Sajeela Kershi talks about the three shows she’s bringing to Edinburgh this year.

In one sentence tell us about your show

I’m doing three shows this year. Fights Like a Girl, about all the things we fight for and fight against, from the Women’s March, Trump Bans to fighting off extremists in a hostage situation. Immigrant Diaries,a true storytelling show with guests, described as a positive antidote to anti immigration/refugee rhetoric and Nasty Women on the Fringe, a backstage vibe with a smorgasbord of the nastiest female performers from all genres performing at the Fringe this August.

What made you decide to bring a show this year?

Apart from the fact I wanted to be part of the 70th anniversary of the Fringe, this year in particular I wanted to make work that made a statement about the world we live in today. So much has happened since the last time I was here in 2015, Brexit, Trump, the recent election, how could I not come and vent my spleen?

Any advice you’ve heard or can give to anyone coming to the Fringe for the first time?

Work on your shows, you can’t cane it late into the night and do shows the next day. Focus on your own journey not how others are doing. Remember everyone turns into a bit of a self absorbed arse for the month (yes including me) so don’t take anything too personally, what happens in Edinburgh stays in Edinburgh, don’t lose friendships connections as a result of what happens in this beautiful crazy smoke and mirrors filled circus. Oh and bring an umbrella.

What makes your shows stand out from all of the others on offer? (Don’t say that it’s because you’re in them!)

All three shows are dealing with current hot topics and issues which effect us all juxtaposed with personal stories/experiences unique to me.

What show, other than your own, do you not want to miss?

I can’t wait to catch my flatmates shows, Charmian Hughes, Mary Bourke – also looking forward to seeing Juliet Meyers, Ada Campe and from the boys camp – Brendon Burns, Nick Revell, Patrick Monahan, Javier Jarquin. Oh, and will you look at that? By coincidence you can also catch all the above on my Immigrant Diaries and Nasty Women on the Fringe shows.

Finally, the boring but essential bit…
