FESTIVAL PREVIEW: B-SIDE Hip-Hop festival set to take over Birmingham Hippodrome for third year

Birmingham Hippodrome’s free annual Hip-Hop festival, B-SIDE, is to return for its third year from 9-13 May 2018.

Taking place around streets in the Southside area of Birmingham and inside the Hippodrome itself, the free festival celebrates all things Hip-Hop with a series of performances, interactive talks, live graffiti art, dance competitions and high-energy workshops.

With headline acts already confirmed including Red Bull BC Champion, Menno Van Gorp and renowned popper Green Tek, and with more acts to be announced in the coming weeks, the festival will feature appearances from some of the best national and international artists as well as showcasing some of the city’s finest local talents.

Alongside the already jam-packed programme of events, and new to this year’s festival, will be the opportunity for audiences to test their Hip-Hop knowledge while competing with friends in a Hip-Hop game show. There will also be artist development labs with creatives, and talks and master classes from professionals and Hip-Hop pioneers such as Elite Force Crew’s, Henry Link.

Commenting on the festival, Associate Director at Birmingham Hippodrome, Graham Callister said: “We are delighted to once again bring Southside to life through B-SIDE Hip-Hop Festival. Working with some amazing national and international artists, performers and partners, bringing together the Hip-Hop community for a celebration of music, dance and spoken word.”

B-SIDE will kick, flip and pop itself off in style at a free launch event at The Lighthouse Young People’s Centre on Saturday 7 April from 12pm. The launch day previews some of what is on offer at the main event in May and will offer free workshops in Breakin, Hip-Hop and Poppin, Graffiti art and Rap and Spoken Word among others. There will also be a dance competition finale to enjoy.

Sponsored by POSCA and supported through funding from Arts Council England, Southside BID and The Arcadian – B-SIDE Hip-Hop Festival is produced by Birmingham Hippodrome in partnership with festival directors Break Mission, MC – Juice Aleem, award-winning choreographer, Mickael Riviére and GraffitiArtist.com.

B-SIDE runs from 9-13 May 2018.  Some free events are ticketed and some workshops may be chargeable. See website for full details.
Launch event details can be found on the B-Side Facebook page.
