BRIGHTON BITES: Eleana Gabrielle – Glitter Gangster

Back by popular demand for 2017, our Brighton Bites series offer short, witty and slightly tongue-in-cheek insights into shows performing at England’s largest arts festival. Hopefully, they will whet your appetite to try something new at this year’s Brighton Fringe.
Here, Elena Gabrielle tells us about her show, Glitter Gangster, which will be performing at The Blue Man.

How would you describe your show in one sentence?
A heart warming and heart breaking story of the life of refugee relocating to Australia in the 1950s and how you have to stand up for what you believe in (all the while looking your best)

Why Brighton Fringe for this show?
I wanted to write this show but performing it in Berlin where I live wouldn’t have the same effect. I want this show to premiere to a predominantly English speaking crowd and I wanted to do it at a fringe festival.

How have you been preparing for Brighton Fringe?
Eating a lot of prosciutto and pasta While translating my great uncle’s diary from Italian to English plus also travelling through Italy and Croatia to meet cousins and hear their stories of the same time.

What do you think sets your show apart from all the other festival offerings?
This is a true story, I have my Great Uncles diary which he wrote the day they left Italy on their six-week boat trip to Australia. I don’t think there is another show like it this festival. This is a story of escaping the war in the 1940s and relocating to Australia as refugees. I’ve done a lot of research, even going back to the small town my grandmother was born in Yugoslavia and tracing my families history. It’s been fascinating, heart warming and heart breaking.

What’s the show that you don’t want to miss at this year’s Brighton Fringe (apart from your own)?

Jess McKerlie’s Gender Spanner

What’s the best bit of advice you’ve ever been given for performing at a Fringe Festival?
Don’t take yourself or your shows too seriously, all that matters is that you’re having fun and meeting like-minded people.

If your show was a flavour of ice cream being sold on Brighton Pier, what would it be?
Rainbow flavour with glitter topping of course ;)
