With over 200 million views on YouTube, the Axis of Awesome return to the Gilded Balloon with their funniest show to date. This year the band are celebrating their 10th anniversary with a fun-filled hour of their greatest hits combined with some brand new material.
Having formed in 2006, the Axis of Awesome consists of three extremely talented Australians: Jordan Raskopoulos as lead vocalist, Benny Davis on guitars and vocals and Lee Naimo on keyboard and vocals. Each and every member of theband play to their own strengths and they all have something unique to offer.
Perhaps most famously known for their hit The 4 Chord Song’ that went viral on social media, the Axis of Awesome performs comedic music that has the audience in hysterics from beginning to end. The flow of the show is perfect and the rapport between each of the band members is a joy to watch. Not only are these guys great musicians, they demonstrated through their funny ditties, a cleverness and sharp wit.
There is a mixture of old and new material throughout the show which also features tracks from their latest album – Viva La Vida Loca Los Vegas. The songs performed cover a range of topical issues including gender and sexuality, particularly relevant to the band as Jordan, the lead vocalists, recently identified as transgender. The show opens with a punchy number addressing The Elephant in the Roomwhich has real meaning and depth, but is equally hilarious.
Lee Naimo is excellent and he steals the show with his impression of the infamous Johnny Cash impersonator – Jackie Change. His incredibly clever parody of Ring of Fire – Square of Ice – is hysterical.
As the name suggests, this band are awesome: awesomely clever, awesomely talented and awesomely amazing.
