A Simple Space is circus-style entertainment of the highest degree. A dizzying, adrenaline fuelled tour-de-force of a performance that will leave you wide-eyed with wonder.
A Simple Space is an exhilarating mix of physical theatre and acrobatics from the team of seven Australians behind award winning company Gravity and Other Myths. The action takes place in a simple setting on stage with no design, and there are absolutely no gimmicks, hence the title for this show.
The premise of the show is one of no-frills but all-thrills and as an audience member you will be unable to stop yourself from gasping as you watch these highly skilled acrobats leap through the air and deliver unbelievable performances without a sign of difficulty.
There is no weak link among the performers, who all showcase their talent with aplomb, and the evidence of the trust and comradery between them only makes the show more enjoyable.
There is an interesting use of lighting within the performance, a small rig of lights on each corner of the stage is operated by the company to provide only the absolutely necessary lighting. A live soundtrack is also provided throughout the show by company member Elliot Zoerner, presented in excitingly experimental ways that complement the movement happening on stage.
The show manages to be funny too with moments of audience interaction which get everyone involved and laughing, and comedy incorporated into the sequences – there is never a dull moment while watching A Simple Space. Be it a performer solving a Rubix cube in a headstand or the ensemble bounding and tumbling around the stage, there is something here for everyone whether you’ve had an interest in acrobatics before or not.
Gravity and Other Myths have created something undeniably special with A Simple Space which showcases jaw-dropping physical feats, hugely impressive athleticism and faultless team work. I guarantee that you’ll leave speechless.
